Two persons, including a bus driver, were burnt after miscreants set a vehicle on fire in Dhaka's Meradia area on Sunday morning, on the first day of the two-day blockade enforced by the BNP and like-minded parties demanding resignation of the government.
Following the attack around 7:30am in Bashpattali area, the driver of the Achhim Paribahan bus lost control of the steering and hit a roadside tree.
Sabuj Miah, 30, who drives a bus of Romzan Paribahan, was on the bus as a passenger as he was travelling to Meradia from Badda. The other injured was identified as Sabbir Hossain, Sabuj's assistant.
Local residents came to his aid and rushed him to Faraji Hospital, from where he was moved to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
Tariqul Islam, a resident doctor at the hospital, said Sabuj suffered a 28% burn injury and his vent has also been burnt.
Sabuj, who lives in Ananda Nagar, hails from Mymensingh.
His wife Rashida Begum said: "My husband is a bus driver for Romzan Paribahan. Today, he was travelling to Bashpattali area of Meradia. As he was getting down from the bus, a group of miscreants set the bus on fire."
When contacted, the local fire station said some local people had already doused the blaze and then informed the fire service of the incident.
Monir Hossain Mollah, officer-in-charge (OC) of Khilgaon police station, told the media that the law enforcers were investigating the incident and the culprits will be brought to book.
Earlier, dozens of buses and cars were vandalized and set on fire in Dhaka and elsewhere during the hartal and three-day blockade last week.
