Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has decided to move its Thursday's mass rally to Friday in the Nayapaltan area after failing to get clearance from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced it at a press briefing on Wednesday at the party chairperson's Gulshan office.
The rally will be held after the Jummah prayer, he said.
Dhaka TribuneFakhrul said that the ongoing movement to restore democracy has now turned into a one-point movement.
“We hope that the government or any institution of the government will not create obstacles in this mass gathering organized as part of the ongoing democratic and peaceful movement aimed at restoring democracy in the country,” he said.
Fakhrul further said that any attempt to obstruct any democratic program organized ahead of the upcoming elections will be viewed by the countrymen as an obstruction to conduct fair elections.
At this time, the secretary general of BNP called upon all concerned to peacefully make the mass rally a success.
Earlier, the opposition party sat in a meeting at 4pm following DMP's suggestion to choose a new venue instead of Suhrawardy Udyan or Nayapaltan to hold their rally.
According to DMP Commissioner Khandaker Golam Faruk, the party was suggested to move the planned rally to any Golapbagh ground or any other field as Thursday is a working day.
On Monday, BNP sent a letter to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) expressing its interest to hold a rally at Naya Paltan or Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on Thursday.
On Saturday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the rally program to press home their one-point demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to pave the way for holding the next national election under a neutral government.
