Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam has said that road signal control in DNCC areas will be monitored through AI (Artificial Intelligence) software.
Besides, DNCC will control the traffic signals of the road, not the police, said the mayor.
He came up with the speech as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of a journalism workshop on road safety held at Nagar Bhaban on Thursday afternoon.
“I brought that technology for AI. Now it's time to implement,” he said.
Stating that the traffic signal at the intersection of experimental Gulshan-2 is being controlled from the central control room of DNCC, the mayor said: "I was running it on a trial basis for a month through artificial intelligence.”
Officially, the experimental work will be shown in the Ministry of Home Affairs on July 11.
Commenting that the police work is not to stop the vehicles with their hands, the police will punish those who break the law, Mayor Atiq said that it will start with Gulshan-2, then gradually other roads will also need to be controlled by the central control room of DNCC.
At this time, priority will be given to pedestrians on DNCC roads, the mayor said.
Works are also underway for making the footpaths wide, safe and comfortable, removing construction materials and illegal shops from the footpaths and bringing hawkers under proper management, said Atiqul.
Adequate zebra crossings and pedestrian bridges are being provided at road crossings, he said.
Therefore, with the aim of reducing road crashes, DNCC is working to make the roads safe, the mayor further added.
