The Detective Branch (DB) of police has detained nine members of a gang in Dhaka. They were making preparations for a robbery in the guise of law enforcers.

The arrestees are Abdullah Al Mamun, Imdadul Sharif, Khokon Mia, Masudur Rahman Tuhin, Mamun Sikder, Kamal Hossain, Wahidul Islam, Faruk Bepari and Matiur Rahman.

They were arrested from the capital’s Motijheel and Mohammadpur areas.

During the drive, a walkie-talkie, a dummy pistol, a pair of handcuffs, a navy blue travel bag, two DB jackets, four new towels, one private car, a microbus and 5,000 pieces of yaba pills were recovered from their possession.

DMP Joint Commissioner (Cyber and Special Crimes, DB-North) Mohammad Harun-Ur-Rashid confirmed the matter at a press conference at the DMP Media Centre on Wednesday.

He said: “Due to the reduction in the severity of the Covid-19 outbreak, public life, as well as economic activities, has returned to a normal pace.

“Several groups, with fake RAB and DB police identities, in Dhaka city and its surrounding areas forcibly pick up people in private cars and microbuses and force them to deposit or withdraw money from the bank.”

The DB official further said that the accused would take the abducted persons to Savar-Ashulia, Beribandh and Rupganj of Narayanganj district and beat them up.

“Later, the culprits would snatch money from them. Sometimes when the victims screamed, the criminals would muffle their voices with a towel.”

Two separate cases of robbery and drugs have been filed with Motijheel police station.
