Awami League backed teachers under "Blue Panel" on Thursday swept Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) election, bagging 14 out of 15 executive committee posts, including all key positions.
Pro-BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami “White panel” won only one member post in the committee.
Blue panel's Prof Dr Rahmat Ullah, dean of DU Law Faculty, has been elected as DUTA president while Prof Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan, of Food and Nutrition Sciences Institute, as general secretary.
Prof Rahmat bagged 945 votes, while his rival Prof Yearul Kabir from White Panel secured 392 votes. Prof Nizamul bagged 970 votes while White Panel's Prof Abdus Salam of the White panel with 381 votes.
Prof Sabita Rezwana Rahman, of microbiology department, won the vice-president post while Dr Md Akram Hosen, of management and information systems department, and Dr Md Abdur Rahim, of islamic history and culture department, were elected treasurer and joint-secretary respectively.
Nine executive members elected from the "Blue" panel are Dr AGM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, of Television, Film and Photography department, Dr Ishtiaque M Syed, of physics, Dr Lafifa Jamal, of robotics and mechatronics engineering, Dr Chandra Nath Podder, of mathematics department, Dr Md Nasir Uddin Munshi, of Information Science and Library management, Dr Mohammad Abdul Moin, of organization strategy and leadership, Dr Sadeka Halim, of sociology, Dr Zinat Huda, of sociology, and Dr Firoj Ahmed, of pharmacy department.
Prof Lutfor Rahaman, of statistics, is the only person elected as member from the pro-BNP White panel.
The Chief Election Commissioner Prof Dr Tofail Ahmed Chowdhury announced the result at Dhaka University Club this afternoon.
As many as 1398 voters, out of 1950, cast their votes. Earlier, voting was held from 10am to 2pm at the teacher's club on the campus.
