Update : 04 Nov 2021, 06:16 PM

Police have arrested an active leader of the military wing of New JMB, an ultra-radical offshoot of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), in Dhaka.

The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) nabbed Abdullah Al Noman alias Abu Basir from Mazar Road area in Mirpur on Wednesday, reports Bangla Tribune.

CTTC chief Additional Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman told the media on Thursday that police had earlier arrested Noman in 2018, but he secured bail after 18 months and soon became active in New JMB’s activities.

Noman used to work under the direction of New JMB Ameer Mahadi Hasan Jon, he said.

“Noman joined New JMB in 2017 after receiving an invitation through Facebook and started carrying out extremist activities, including recruiting members. He kept in touch with other New JMB members through telegram channels and bots,” Asaduzzaman added.

On July 24, 2020, Noman had placed an IED (improvised explosive device) under a lamppost in front of a police checkpoint in Purana Paltan and detonated it by remote control, said the CTTC chief.

A case was also started in this connection at Paltan police station.
