Police detain stray dog killer in Mirpur

Update : 19 Oct 2021, 10:46 PM

A video of a stray dog being beaten to death with a metal stick has drawn widespread criticism on social media.

Many animal rights activists declined to share the video but they criticized the role of citizens who witnessed the incident but did not take any step to stop the perpetrator.

Dulal, a resident of Mirpur-13 area of the capital who owns a rickshaw garage, killed the dog on Sunday.

Kafrul police detained him on Tuesday hours after a complaint was filed by People for Animal Welfare founder and Chairman Rakibul Haq Emil. Members of other animal rights groups were also present at the time.

Emil said: “The man brutally killed the dog without any hesitation in front of children, which is the worst example of an inhuman act. People were seen enjoying the torture perpetrated on the dog. There is a possibility of those children growing up with psychology defined by similar brutality in future.”

He demanded that Dulal be punished under the Animal Welfare Act of 2019.

If convicted, he will have to face jail for six months or a fine of Tk10,000 or both.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kafrul police station Hafizur Rahman said: “We have received a complaint from animal rights activists and are looking into the matter. We are investigating the extent of the crime by keeping him in police custody.”

He alleged that the dog had rabies and it had bitten several people in the area. “If we find Dulal’s crime to be minimal, then he will be warned and let go after signing a bond.”

Animal rights activists of the area and the plaintiff, however, said that the dog had been healthy and the allegation of biting people was a lie.
