Update : 17 Oct 2021, 03:56 PM

Police have arrested 21 people, including Khelafat Andolon Ameer Maulana Zafrullah Khan, in the cases filed over clashes in Dhaka after the Friday prayers between cops and protesters outraged by the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran at a puja venue in Comilla.

Two of the cases were started by the police with Ramna and Paltan police stations early on Saturday on charges including assault on police, obstruction of government work and vandalism.

Twenty-one named people as well as some 4,000 unnamed persons were accused in the cases.

Police arrested the Khelafat Andolon chief in the case filed with Paltan police station, according to media reports.

Friday's clashes erupted in the capital's Kakrail and Bijoynagar areas as Muslim devotees brought out a procession in protest of the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran in Comilla, an incident for which very little evidence has emerged.

The demonstrators started the procession after exiting the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque premises following Jumma prayers.

Another separate procession was brought out in Chawkbazar the same day, which also clashed with cops trying to obstruct them. Police later initiated a case with Chawkbazar police station in this connection.
