Ashraful Alom, better known as Hero Alom, an independent candidate for the upcoming Dhaka-17 by-election, has alleged that he came under an attack while carrying out his election campaign in the Sat Tola slum of Mohakhali in Dhaka.
A group of 20-25 female members prevented Hero Alom from entering the slum through the road adjacent to the gate of the icddr,b in Mohakhali at noon on Wednesday.
He said was attacked repeatedly as he tried to enter the slum by avoiding the obstruction.
At the time, a few teenagers and several people identified as slum dwellers took part in the attack.
At one point, Hero Alom took shelter in the icddr,b (International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh) complex.
He spoke to journalists there.
As a result of the attack, Alom postponed his campaign and announced that he would immediately go to the Election Commission to seek justice.
He claimed that the attackers were local Awami League leaders and activists.
The attack proves that the election will not be fair in any way, he added.
On the other hand, the women who took part in the attack said Alom attacked them earlier and they only retaliated.
The Dhaka-17 by-election will be held on July 17.
