The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Police unit will be formed with 231 members to ensure security and safety checks at every metro rail station in Dhaka.
“The Secretary Committee has approved the formation of the MRT Police. The notification will be issued after the approval of the prime minister,” Police Headquarters Additional Deputy Director General (Operation and Management) Faruk Ahmed said on Sunday.
The MRT Police would be managed under the leadership of a deputy inspector general (DIG) of police. Besides, a police superintendent will also be working for the MRT Police.
Asked about the activities of this Police Unit, Faruk Ahmed said: “The MRT Police will work the same way as the ones of other countries. It will mainly work for the maintenance of order, the safety of passengers and security of the metro rail installation.”
The Police Headquarters had prepared a proposal for 900 manpower to form the MRT police and sent it to the Home Ministry. Later, with the opinions of various ministries, including the Finance Ministry, the recommendation of 357 manpower was submitted to the Secretary Committee.
