Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed, chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), on Tuesday demanded proper action over a fire at the capital's Bangabazar market.
"We often see that such incidents are investigated, reports are submitted, but no action is taken as recommended by the reports," he said while visiting Bangabazar.
NHRC Permanent Member Md Salim Reza and other officials were also present.
Several thousand shops were burnt and traders suffered extreme losses in the blaze.
"We call on all concerned to come forward to provide them with necessary assistance," the NHRC chairman added.
He further said: "By ensuring proper investigation into all fires and exemplary punishment of those responsible for them, such incidents can be prevented."
The devastating fire broke out at the market around 6:10am and soon spread.
Forty-eight firefighting units were engaged in extinguishing the blaze.
