Update : 01 Apr 2023, 03:58 PM

Prothom Alo reporter Samsuzzaman Shams' mother, Karimon Nesa, broke down in tears while demanding her son's release from jail at a human chain in Dhaka's Dhamrai on Saturday.

Locals and members of Dhamrai Reporters Club and Dhamrai upazila Press Club participated in the one-hour program in the Dautia area of Sombhag union on the Dhaka-Aricha highway around 11am.

The surrounding environment had become heavy with Karimon Nesa's cries. Later, she was taken away from the human chain.

Moderated by journalist Ariful Islam Sabbir, Samsuzzaman's cousin Farooq Hossain, his late brother SP Rabiul Karim's wife Umme Salma and Dhamrai Reporters Club President Adnan Hossain, among others, were present at the program.

Speakers at the human chain said Samsuzzaman always highlights the plight of the masses in his reports.

There are no accusations of anti-state activities against his family members and his brother even gave his life in the line of duty; despite that Samsuzzaman was sent to jail over a report, the speakers said.

Farooq Hossain said no one from Samsuzzaman's family has ever been involved in any anti-state activities, before demanding the immediate release of his cousin.

Echoing his demand, the speakers said the Digital Security Act (DSA) was enacted to stop journalists and obstruct journalism.

They also demanded the repeal of the act immediately.

The local press club formed another human chain on the side of the Dhaka-Aricha highway with the same demand.

Around 30-35 journalists participated and demanded the immediate release of Samsuzzaman Shams and the repeal of the Digital Security Act.

Prothom Alo reporter Samsuzzaman Shams, working in Savar near the capital Dhaka, was picked up from his house in the Ambagan area near Jahangirnagar University in the early hours of Wednesday by the CID for allegedly publishing fake and fabricated news.

Later, he was sued under the DSA on the same day and a Dhaka court sent him to jail on Thursday rejecting his bail plea.

The journalist is now in Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.
