Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam has warned shopkeepers that their shops will be shut down if they charge more than the government-set market prices for goods during the month of Ramadan.
“We have formed a market monitoring committee by making the councilor the convener of the team. Apart from this, regional executive officers, executive magistrates, and councilors will be in the field,” he said after inaugurating a digital display board showing the price list of essential items.
“We will monitor the entire month of Ramadan to find out whether anyone is charging high prices or not. If anyone complains that any of you charged high prices, then I will shut the shop down,” the mayor mentioned.
Buyers can complain to the Directorate of National Consumers' Right Protection if they find any shopkeepers charging extra for an item.
“Apart from this, complaints can also be made on the DNCC hotline (16106). The mobile numbers of the DNCC chief revenue officer, chairman, and general secretary of the committee will be also shown on the display board. Consumers can complain by calling these numbers,” Mayor Atiqul said.
The holy month of Ramadan of 1444 Hijri will begin in Bangladesh on Friday.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Moon-Sighting Committee in the conference room of the Islamic Foundation (IF) at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on Wednesday.
