Three Dhaka University students have been arrested for robbing a driver of a covered van near the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) area of the capital.
A patrol team of Shahbag police station arrested the three when the driver was screaming for help at around 2:30am on Saturday.
The arrestees are theater department student Nabid Shakil, 19, management department student Rahat Rahman, 21, and social welfare and research department student Sadik Ahammed, 20, said Shahbag police station SI Omar Sani Naim on Monday.
All three of them have confessed to the crime during primary interrogation, said the SI.
The arrestees had allegedly demanded Tk50,000 from the driver. However, when the driver could not give them the amount, the students snatched Tk15,000 from him, the SI added.
The covered van driver, Abu Taher, filed a case in this regard. The students were sent to jail after a court order on Sunday.
The driver said: "My younger brother and I were heading toward Tongi on Saturday night. When we were near Buet, a motorcycle stopped our vehicle and ordered us to get down from the truck.”
He said the students also beat him and took the Tk15,000 he had in his pocket.
