Curtain rises on Dhaka International Mobile Film Festival

The closing ceremony of the festival will be held on Monday at Star Cineplex's Shimanto Shambhar branch

The much-anticipated 9th Dhaka International Mobile Film Festival (DIMFF 2023) raised its curtain on Saturday.

“Black Maria”, a dark tent carrying the name for film screening, was a unique experience for DIMFF which was held at the ULAB permanent campus, reads a press release.

Prof Jude William Genilo, head of ULAB's media studies and journalism department, inaugurated the first session. 

“No matter what type of ethnicity you belong – whether you are black or white – film brings us all together,” he said. 

Festival Director Md Sambitul Islam stated: “I am very grateful to my team who worked hard for the whole year together to make this event possible.”

Chief guest Gousul Alam Shaon, managing partner and country head at Grey Group Bangladesh, congratulated DIMFF for making such a platform and said: “Film industry is growing even with mobile phones. I am honoured to share the day with young film-enthusiastic people here.”

Later, Shimul Chandra Biswas, jury chair of the “Open Door” and “Vertical Film” categories, said: “I want the new generation to explore their stories with the mobile phones in their hands by making films.”

The film screening began after the speeches. With the film screening, an interactive question and answer session was also held in the second session. 

Later, Syeda Sadia Mehjabin, teacher of media studies and journalism department of ULAB and advisor of DIMFF, gave certificates to the three best campus ambassadors and students who did the workshop. 

The first day of DIMFF 2023 ended with a thanking speech by Festival Director Md Sambitul Islam.

The closing ceremony of the festival will be held at Star Cineplex's Shimanto Shambhar branch at 7pm on Monday.
