Dhaka Custom House recovered 14kgs gold bars at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
Customs House Revenue Officer Shafiqul Islam confirmed the information on Thursday.
At the same time, a bus driver – Md Harun-ur-Rashid who was carrying the flight passengers was detained on suspicion of smuggling.
On information that a US Bangla flight from Dubai to Dhaka would carry the gold illegally and that the gold would be moved by the airlines' bus, a team of Customs House conducted an operation.
At one point during the search, four hidden packets of gold bars wrapped in black scotch tape were recovered as shown by US Bangla bus driver Md Harun-ur-Rashid.
Upon opening the box, they recovered 120 gold bars worth around Tk9.1 crore.
Customs House Revenue Officer Shafiqul Islam said: “Primarily, we believe that the driver was trying to smuggle the gold bars through the airport area in connivance with an organized smuggling ring.”
The bus has been placed in the custody of the Bangladesh Civil Aviation Authority (CAAB). Other seized evidence is deposited at the Airport police station.
