6th edition of Dhaka Art Summit begins Friday

Dhaka Art Summit (DAS), the largest exhibition platform for art and architecture in Bangladesh, is going to commence on Friday. 

A press conference was organized to celebrate this year's art summit at Shilpakala Academy's Jatiya Chitrashala auditorium on Wednesday, according to a press release. 

Nadia Samdani MBE and Rajeeb Samdani of Samdani Art Foundation shared the details of the art summit with the media. 

More than 160 local and international artists will participate in the event. Climate change, gender relations, discussions on different generations will be focused in the event of this year to be held from February 3-11.

The exhibition of Dhaka Art Summit will be held at the National Art Gallery building of Shilpakala Academy. The entire courtyard has already been aesthetically decorated around the exhibition. 

The nine-day long event will have workshops, performance seminars and diverse exhibitions with the participation of renowned art critics and art collectors from home and abroad.

The theme of the 2023 Dhaka Art Summit is “Bonna” (flood). In riverine Bangladesh, “Bonna” (flood) is not just a name for disaster but a lot more, hence young girls are named “Bonna”. This time, “Bonna” (flood)" will be presented at the Dhaka Art Summit in a different way: with questions that go against conventional binary thinking about necessity and non-necessity, recovery from disaster and reconstruction, kids and adults, women and men, etc. 

The participating artists' exhibitions will reveal the full significance of this connection. 

The Samdani Art Award exhibition will also feature the works of 12 Bangladeshi artists, whose works will be centred on social, economic, and environmental themes.

Salman F Rahman, prime minister's private sector and investment adviser, consented to be present on February 3 to act as the chief guest for the opening of the 6th Dhaka Art Summit. 

On the opening day, additional special guests will include KM Khalid, state minister for culture, Liaquat Ali Lucky, director general of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Nadia Samdani MBE, director of Dhaka Art Summit and president of Samdani Art Foundation, Rajeeb Samdani, trustee of Dhaka Art Summit and Samdani Art Foundation, Mohammad Saker Shamim, managing director and CEO of Golden Harvest Agro Industries Limited, among others.

Dhaka Art Summit will be open to all from 10am to 8pm with adequate security and facilities. However, incoming visitors will not be able to carry a handbag larger than (8 inches * 6 inches). Any device that disrupts the event will also be banned. Apart from this, water or any other food cannot be entered into the venue.    

Artists participating in the 6th edition of the Art Summit include – Sumaiya Vali, Antony Gromley, Asfika Rahman, Vinodbihari Mukherjee, Bhasha Chakraborty, Chitraprasad, Daniel Boyd, Damasus Hacha, Faisal Zaman, Ganesh Paini, Ghazaleh Avarzamani, Habik Chuhen, Habiba Nowroz, Jamal Ahmed, Jaydev Roja, Jani Rusika, Kabir Ahmed Masum Chishti, Kamruzzaman Swadhan, Lala Rukh, Lapdiang Saiyem, Marina Perez Simao, Nabil Ahmed, Nazmun Nahar Kaya, Paul Taburet, Rupali Gupta and Prasad Shetty, Purnima Akhtar, Rafiqun Nabi, Safiuddin Ahmed, Sahej Rahal, Tanya Goyal, Veronica Hapchenko, Yasmin Jahan Nupur. , Rizvi Hasan, Ganesh Pine and others.

Dhaka Art Summit started its journey in 2012. Since then, the exhibition has been successfully completed five times. Samdani Art Foundation organizes art summit every two years at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. The aim of this art foundation is to establish a deep relationship with the art of Bangladesh and South Asia and to showcase the country's artists in the international arena.
