Journalist Shabnam Sharmin's family claimed on Wednesday that she was tortured and then forced to kill herself.

The cause of her death has not yet been released by the police.

She may have passed away four-five days ago, according to the police, who recovered her body on Tuesday after it was discovered in a rented home in the Moghbazar neighbourhood of the capital.

The victim's younger brother, Amar Rashid, stated on Wednesday that even if the victim committed suicide, there might have been direct or indirect torture involved.

“After the post-mortem report on the body, the truth will be revealed,” he added.

She had limited interaction with the family, according to the deceased's siblings and other relatives. It is also known that she has worked at various Dhaka locations during the past 10-12 years.

According to Sub-Inspector Faisal at the Hatirjheel police station: "We think she passed away three-four days ago based on the body's decomposition. The cause of death, however, has not yet been determined.”

Shabnam Parveen, the deceased's older sister, stated: "We have learned that Saidul Islam, Sharmin's husband, physically and mentally abused her for divorce. All things considered, we believe Sharmin was tortured into killing herself.”

The husband of the deceased Sharmin is Asian TV's former crime correspondent Saidul Islam. He was contacted several times on the phone but his phone was switched off.
