A clash has erupted between some leaders and activists of the Chhatra League and Chhatra Dal, the student wings of the ruling Awami League and the BNP respectively, on the Dhaka University campus.

The skirmish took place when the DU unit of Chhatra Dal was on its way to meet Vice Chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman on Tuesday.

Chhatra Dal leaders alleged that at least seven of their members had sustained injuries in the clash when the Chhatra League men attacked them near AF Rahman Hall of the university.

According to several media reports, when the Chhatra Dal activists tried to enter the university through its Mukti o Gonotontro Toron gate at the Nilkhet point at around 4pm, a member of the AF Rahman Hall unit of the Chhatra League was trying to obstruct their path. Dozens of activists of the same dorm unit soon turned up and launched an attack on the Chhatra Dal men.

Later, members of other dorm units of Chhatra League came to the spot, took up positions and started raising anti-Chhatra Dal slogans.

Ariful Islam, general secretary of the Chhatra Dal’s DU committee, told reporters that some members of the organization had been injured by the Chhatra League men.

His counterpart in the Chhatra League, Saddam Hossain, claimed that the Chhatra Dal members could have sustained injuries during a factional clash between the organization’s own activists.

“We were busy at the VC’s office talking about some student affairs-related issues.”

Dhaka Tribune’s photojournalist Mehedi Hasan, a witness to the clash, said: “Some 20-25 leaders of the newly announced committee of the Chhatra Dal’s DU unit were at the Nilkhet intersection at 3:30pm, preparing to pay a courtesy call on the university VC.

“When they started towards his office with bouquets in hand at 4:30pm, two Chhatra League leaders stopped them, said many Chhatra League activists had taken up position up ahead and warned that if they (Chhatra Dal leaders) advanced there was a chance of something untoward happening.

“In response, the Chhatra Dal leaders said they were on their way to pay a courtesy visit to the VC’s office in a peaceful manner, with flowers.”

When they moved forward and reached AF Rahman Hall, Chhatra League men armed with sticks charged at them, injuring several from the Chhatra Dal team, said Mehedi.
