Father sent to jail over Brac student’s death

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate scrapped the bail plea and ordered to send the defendant to jail

A Dhaka Court on Saturday sent Shaheen Alam, 48, father of of Brac University student who reportedly killed herself, to jail for allegedly abetting the suicide.

As Alam was produced before the court, the investigation officer of the case pleaded for keeping the arrestee in jail till the investigation is over. On the other hand, the lawyer of the defendant pleaded for granting his bail.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Humayun Kabir scrapped the bail plea and ordered to send him to jail.

On Thursday, Alam was placed on a one-day remand by another Metropolitan Magistrate Shuvra Chakrabarty.

Alam was arrested by the members of the Rapid Action Battalion from Gafargaon area in Mymensingh district on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in provoking his daughter Sanjana Mosaddika, a second year English student of Brac University, to commit suicide.

Body of Sanjana Mosaddika, 21, was recovered by police on August 27, who allegedly committed suicide by jumping off a 12-storey building in city’s Dakshinkhan Mollartek area.

Police sources said they found a note written before the suicide, where Sanjana blamed her father for her death.

Later, her mother Ummse Salma filed a case against her father alleging that the victim had been tortured by him for a long time.
