A bus driver was reportedly lynched following an altercation with passengers over fare on the Narsinghpur-Kashimpur road in Ashulia of Savar on Tuesday.
The deceased is Arif Hossain, 26, a driver of Kiranmala Paribahan.
Ashulia police station Inspector Ziaul Haque said the police had recovered the body and sent it to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka for autopsy.
According to the police and locals, the driver’s assistant started arguing with a passenger when the bus reached the Itkhola area.
At one point, the passenger got down without paying his fare, following which the driver stopped the bus and a heated argument ensued between the two over the matter.
The passenger then suddenly started beating the driver. Some youths in the area joined him in thrashing the driver. After that, the driver lost consciousness.
Other passengers of the bus rescued the driver and took him to a local hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Those involved in the incident would face legal action, Inspector Ziaul said.
