The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Sunday arrested two men on charges of selling illegal signal jammers or mobile phone jammers online.
Md Abu Noman, 28, and Sohel Rana, 27, had been nabbed from Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area during a raid, RAB-3 chief Lt Col Arif Mohiuddin Ahmed told a press briefing.
Four mobile network jammers, 24 jammer antennas, three power cables, three mobile network boosters, nine booster outdoor antennas, 26 booster indoor antennas, 37 booster cables and a laptop were seized from the accused.
The two had been selling signal jammers and boosters online for quite some time, the RAB official said. Noman had a website and Facebook page (IT Stall) through which he had been illegally selling these devices at a high price, Mohiuddin added.
They used to import these devices by paying extra shipping charges to legal importers, the RAB-3 chief said.
The official also mentioned that several criminals had purchased these devices from the two in the past, in order to keep law enforcement's mobile networks occupied when they wanted to commit a crime nearby.
In that way, when the victims tried to contact law enforcement agencies, they failed to get a signal on their phone. This allowed criminals to hide and commit crimes without hindrance.
The accused had violated the Telecommunication Act, 2001, the RAB official added.
