Supporters of a councillor took away construction items during a drive by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), launched to reclaim a waterbody in Khikhet area of the capital on Thursday.
The incident took place in the presence of Mayor Atiqul Islam and other DNCC officials.
Supporters of Ishak Miah, councilor of ward-17, took away iron grills, cement bags and other construction materials from an under-construction site that was being demolished by the DNCC.
They also got hold of some tables and chairs, and kept them in a temporary hut on the site.
The city authorities were demolishing the site as part of the ongoing drive to reclaim water bodies in and around the city.
A journalist of the Bengali daily Prothom Alo, Drinja Chambugang, was also assaulted by the councillor’s supporters for capturing footage of the looting.
The councillor's personal assistant (PS) Hasmat Ali hurled abusive words at the journalist. They also grabbed the journo and tried to delete the footage.
President of Urban Development Journalists Forum Bangladesh (UDJFB) Amitosh Paul and General Secretary Shohel Mamun expressed their concerns over the attack on the journalist.
