Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Saturday said the process of relocating Karwan Bazar wholesale kitchen market to Gabtoli and Sayedabad areas is in the final stage.
He also said that a wholesale market like Karwan Bazar should not be at the heart of the city. “Karwan Bazar will be a modern hub of business after the wholesale market is relocated,” he said.
The mayor was addressing the inauguration of a public awareness campaign on the usage of masks at Karwan Bazar area of the capital.
“The plan of relocating the market is at the final stage but it needs everyone’s cooperation. The DNCC has discussed the matter with the shop owners' association and the home minister in this regard,” he added.
The government has chalked out a master plan for around 500 acres of the Tejgaon Industrial Area, which was developed in the 1950s as part of efforts to modernize Dhaka. In line with the plan, the government decided to relocate the Karwan Bazar kitchen market and Tejgaon truck terminals.
