BNP leader Tabith Awal was attacked by a group of unidentified youths while returning from a party program in the Banani area of Dhaka on Saturday.
Shairul Kabir Khan, a member of the party's media cell, confirmed the news of the incident to Bangla Tribune.
Shairul Kabir Khan said Tabith Awal was taken to United Hospital after suffering serious injuries in the attack.
Earlier, a BNP sit-in program in front of the local Sheraton began at around 7pm in the evening.
At the same time, leaders and activists of Dhaka Metropolitan North Awami League took position near Kakali intersection and chanted slogans.
BNP Joint Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal said: “Chhatra League and Jubo League were marching on the other side of the road even before our program started. When Khandkar Mosharraf Hossain's speech was almost at the end, they came from the other side and attacked our leaders and activists. Many activists were injured in this attack.”
Alal said Tabith Awal was seriously injured and it was unimaginable that a peaceful program could be attacked in such a manner.
Banani police station Officer-in-Charge Noore Azam Miah told Bangla Tribune that a group of youths carried out an attack after the BNP's program, and police were on site and looking into the matter.
