The hanging body of a domestic help was recovered from the residence of an additional deputy inspector general of police (Additional DIG) in the capital.
The deceased was identified as Mousumi Akhter, 14.
The body was recovered from Additional DIG Abu Hassan Muhammad Tariq’s Ramna residence on Wednesday afternoon. The cause of death was not immediately known.
Police said a policeman, in charge of DIG Tariq’s security team, went home around 5pm on Wednesday.
At that time the door of the house was locked from the inside. After reporting the incident to the Ramna police station, police broke down the door and recovered the hanging body of Mousumi.
The wife and children of the additional DIG were out of the house at the time.
Ramna police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Mominur Rahman said the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police recovered the evidence from the spot.
Family alleges murder
Meanwhile, Mousumi’s family alleged that she was tortured at the DIG’s house and that she was murdered.
Her mother Farida Begum broke down in tears when Mousumi’s body was sent to her house in Tangail’s Ghatail upazila on Thursday evening.
According to her, Mousumi was sent to work at DIG Tariq’s house three years ago. The family had been struggling since her father Muktar Ali, a farmer, died seven years ago.
“She was never allowed to come home,” Farida Begum told Dhaka Tribune.
Last Eid Mousumi was not allowed to go home. Hence Farida went to visit her. However, she was not allowed to see her daughter.
At one point, when she threatened to go to the police, DIG Tariq’s family let her see her daughter for five minutes.
Farida said that when she asked her daughter if she was being tortured, the police officer’s wife signaled to her and Mousumi did not say anything.
“Mousumi has been murdered. I want justice,” she said, adding that DIG Tarique also arranged a job for her son near a border.
“Bring my son back to me. They will kill him too,” she said, as she broke down once more.
“There is no way such a young girl killed herself. It was murder,” said Amin Islam, her brother-in-law.
Mizanur Rahman Hira, the local chairman, called on the authorities to ensure justice and promised to stand by Mousumi’s family.
