Call for preserving Dhaka’s cultural heritage

Seminar guests highlight role of Dhaka's Nawab family in promoting education, establishment of DU

A poetry session and seminar at Dhaka University has called for practice and preservation of Dhaka's rich cultural heritage, its local dialect and the Dhakaiya Urdu language.

The Eid reunion, seminar and mushaira (poetry session) was held at DU’s RC Majumdar Auditorium under the joint aegis of two socio-cultural organizations — Dhaka Urdu Juban and Shahitya-O-Gobeshona Kendra — on Friday.

The attendees highlighted the role of Dhaka's Nawab family in promoting education, establishment of DU, and practice and patronization of Persian and Dhakaiya Urdu languages and literatures.

Former DU Urdu department chair Dr Zeenat Ara Shirazi attended the event as the chief guest.

Other speakers included, among others, Prof Md Golam Rabbani of the Urdu department, writer Rafiqul Islam Rafiq, former Dhaka Samity secretary Abu Huraira, former National Museum director Dr Md Alamgir, Nawab family’s Khwaja Javed Hasan and Barrister Sadia Arman.

The session ended with poetry recitations by students of the Urdu department as well as some of the guests.
