Dhaka University student Ilma Chowdhury, whose dead body was found with injury marks at her in-laws’ in December, was not murdered, according to detectives.

Following a near four-month investigation, the Detective Branch (DB) of police said Ilma had committed suicide.

DB Gulshan Zone Deputy Commissioner Moshiur Rahman said: “Her husband Iftekhar Abedin, mother-in-law Shirin Amin and father-in-law Md Amin would press her to commit suicide. Unable to bear their torture, Ilma finally took her own life."

Ilma Chowdhury, a student of the Department of Dance, died on December 14.

Ilma's father Saiful Islam Chowdhury filed a case in this connection at Banani police station on December 15, accusing Ilma’s husband Iftekhar and her in-laws.

Iftekhar was remanded for seven days in total in three spells.

According to the case statement, Ilma and Iftekhar got married in April last year.

Soon after, Iftekhar and his parents started pressuring Ilma to discontinue her study.

They started physically abusing her as she had not given in to their demand.

Iftekhar later went to Canada and returned home on December 12.

Two days later, Iftekher phoned Ilma’s mother, saying that Ilma was sick and was being taken to a hospital in Gulshan.

Ilma’s father also mentioned in the case that he had checked her body as her husband and in-laws had been acting suspiciously.

He later decided to sue them as he had found wounds on her body.
