Deputy commissioners (DCs),  in-charge of the administration in districts, have been instructed by Information Minister Hasan Mahmud to take steps if anyone spreads rumors and propaganda on social media.

“Social media is a big space for spreading propaganda just the way it is a big platform for publicity,” he said on Thursday.

The minister was speaking to the media after a session on the third day of the DC conference at Osmani Memorial Auditorium .

“Statistics show that in the last seven to eight years, all the propaganda spread with ulterior motives and all the mishaps that happened, was due to social media,” he said.

According to the minister the top district officials have been asked to take steps against rumours.

Hasan said that according to the broadcasting policy, news cannot be broadcast on IPTVs or YouTube.

“But it’s happening. In some cases news bulletins are being aired in IPTVs as well as YouTube,” he said.

“The broadcasting policy has been approved by the Cabinet. The DCs have been instructed to take effective steps in this regard,” he said.
