About 43.68% of the total Covid-linked deaths in the country have been reported in Dhaka division, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Chittagong division occupied the second position with 20% of the total deaths while Khulna reported 12.88%, Rajshahi 7.35%, Barisal 3.38% and Mymensingh 3.02% deaths.
DGHS spokesperson Dr Robed Amin said this at a briefing on Covid-19 on Wednesday.
Bangladesh reported 2,916 more infections in the 24 hours till Wednesday morning with a positivity rate of 11.68%.
Four more deaths were registered during the same period, taking the death toll to 28,111 since March 2020.
Moreover, with the new detection of three Omicron cases in Jessore, the country’s tally rises to 33 as of Wednesday.
Bangladesh is currently seeing a surge of Covid cases as 10,392 infections were reported from January 1-10.
From Thursday, the government will conduct mobile courts, if necessary, to enforce the 11-point restrictions on public movement across the country.
On the oxygen storage in the hospitals amid Covid surge, Dr Robed said: “We have stored enough supply of oxygen. If the number of patients rises in future, we hope there will be no big crisis of oxygen.”
Meanwhile, the health authorities have designated Dhaka and Rangamati as “red zones”, following an exponential rise in Covid infections in the two districts.
The infection rate in Dhaka and Rangamati is 10-19%, according to the DGHS data.
Besides, six districts, including Jessore, have been marked as “yellow zones” or at "mid-level risk". The infection rate in these districts is between 5% and 9%, the directorate said on Wednesday.
On the other hand, 54 districts have been marked as “green zones” while the sample test rate of Panchagarh and Bandarban districts are poor.
