Daily Covid count: Deaths, cases in Dhaka highest among divisions

The densely-populated capital has been a virus hotspot ever since the pandemic began

Dhaka has logged 74 out of the 226 deaths reported on Thursday, the highest among eight divisions, as well as counted nearly 43% of the total infections.

According to the figures by the health directorate, it logged 5,234  cases out of the day’s caseload of 12,236.

The nation’s capital has been a hotspot for infections ever since the pandemic broke out in Bangladesh in March last year.

Strict health safety measures had brought the infection rate in Dhaka city under control, but it has surged to over 28% from nearly 3.50% just a month ago.

Figures released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday showed, Khulna division followed Dhaka with 52 deaths.

Chittagong counted 42 fatalities while Rajshahi 24, Rangpur 13, Mymensingh 10, Barisal six, and Sylhet five.

With 5,234 new infections, Dhaka division accounted for 42.77% of Thursday's caseload followed by Chittagong with 2,067 (16.7%) cases and Khulna with 1,639 cases (13.4%).

Rajshahi reported 1,269 cases while Rangpur 511, Barisal and Sylhet divisions 500 infections each and Mymensingh division saw 498 cases.

Overall Bangladesh has reported a little over 1.07 million cases, including 17,278 deaths.
