Woman confesses to killing parents, sibling

Claims by the daughter are under investigation, police say

Update : 19 Jun 2021, 02:18 PM

Police on Saturday recovered the bodies of a man, his wife, and their younger daughter from a house in Dhaka's Kadamtali area.

Elder daughter of the family Mehzabin Islam Moon has confessed to police in primary interrogation that she killed her family over a dispute.

Kadamtali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mir Jamal Uddin said Mehzabin has been detained

The three deceased were identified by relatives and police as Masud Rana, 50, his wife Mousumi Akter, 45, and their daughter Jannat, 18.

“Two more people were also rescued from the spot and are currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH),” OC Jamal said.

They are the deceased couple’s son-in-law and Mehzabin’s husband Shafiqul Islam, 40, and his daughter, Marjan Tabassum Triptia, 5, confirmed DMCH police outpost In-Charge Bachchu Mia.

Moreover, the OC told this newspaper: “Mehzabin fed all of them sleeping pills on Friday night. Then, she tied the hands and feet of her parents and sister with rope. Our initial investigation found that she put the rope around their necks and strangled them.

“She has admitted in primary interrogation that she killed her parents and sister. No case has been filed centering this incident. We are assuming that Mehzabin is mentally ill,” the police official added

Kadamtali police station Assistant Sub-Inspector Abdus Salam said they rescued Mehzabin’s husband and daughter in an unconscious state and brought them to DMCH

Mehzabin's husband Shafiqul told reporters in DMCH: "My house is in Baganbari area of Kadamtali. I came to my father-in-law's house with my family last night. My wife Mehzabin had been in a dispute with her father for some time. She killed them over that dispute. I fell unconscious and cannot remember anything after taking tea served by my wife on Friday night.”

Later, around 6pm, the husband was shifted to Mitford Hospital. No relative had claimed the bodies of the deceased at the time of filing this report.

Mehzabin called police

Iftekhar Ahmed, deputy commissioner (DC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Wari division, said Mehzabin threatened to murder her husband and daughter in a call to 999 (the national helpline) after killing her parents and sister

“She said hurry up, or else I will kill the rest,” the DC told Dhaka Tribune.

Law enforcement officials rushed to the address mentioned by Mehzabin, recovered the three dead bodies and sent the two others to hospital..

Why such grisly anger?

Police quoted Mehazabin as saying that she had long been angry with her family members.

“Her expatriate father recently returned from Saudi Arabia and he had raised another family there,” DC Iftekhar said.

“Mehzabin claims her mother forced both the sisters into sex work in the absence of their father. After her marriage, she asked her mother to stop forcing her sister but the mother did not,” he added.

He further said Mehazabin claimed her younger sister was having an extramarital affair with her husband.

Mehzabin’s cousin Shila claimed to the media that Mehzabin also murdered her previous husband.

“Mehzabin, her parents and sister were jailed in that case. They were released on bail after serving five years in jail,” Shila claimed.

However, the DMP DC Iftekhar told this newspaper: “We have received information that Mehzabin’s first husband was allegedly killed by her present husband Shafiqul. We are verifying this information and also the claims by Mehzabin.”
