Mahmuda Sihabum Mubin Mou, a 30-year-old woman, has been undergoing treatment at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (SHNIBPS) after reportedly setting herself on fire on Sunday night.
Neither the woman nor her family have disclosed any reason for the attempted suicide, police sources said.
Police picked up Mou’s husband Irfan Haium, who had taken her to the hospital, for questioning at 10am. He was released at 1pm as Mou had no complaints against him.
Mirpur police station Officer-in-Charge Mostafizur Rahman said: “Irfan Haium is now with Mou’s family. Her family said there are some troubles in all families and they no longer have any complaints about Haium.
“Mou herself said in front of a duty officer that she has no complaints about anyone. There is nothing we can do here,” he added.
Quoting the family, the OC said Mou and her husband had a quarrel over employment issues on May 17. Subsequently, Mou left their house in Rupnagar to stay with her parents at East Kazipara.
After staying with her parents for two days, Mou moved to a hostel opposite their home in Rupnagar.
On Sunday night, Mou poured kerosene and set herself on fire in front of the hostel. After learning of the incident, Haium and Mou’s parents took her to the hospital.
Haium used to work as a cameraman at Channel24, and Mou also used to work there at one time. The two were married in 2016, with Mou becoming Haium’s third wife and he her second husband.
The two were separated once before.
Mou’s mother Nasrin said: “Out daughter if fighting for her life right now. We have patched up any issues with Haium and don’t want to pursue any action as per her wishes.”
Earlier, Mou’s family had claimed that she was the victim of an attempted murder.
SHNIPS Dr Partho Sankar Pal said Mou sustained burns on 48% of her body and she is in critical condition.
