A Dhaka University (DU) student was declared dead by doctors at the hospital after emergency responders found her unconscious at her Dhaka home on Sunday.

Twenty-one-year-old Ishrat Jahan Tusti was a student of the English Department at the university.

Inspector Md Bacchu Miah of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost, said: “The body is currently in the hospital morgue and the local police station has been notified.”

As the university dorms were closed owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, Ishrat, along with another student, had been staying in a house of the government staff quarters at Azimpur by subleasing a room, said Ishrat’s classmate Safayet.

Quoting Ishrat’s roommate, he said Ishrat had cold-related problems and had been feeling unwell after getting drenched in the rain on Saturday.

“She entered the bathroom sometime early on Sunday. Her roommate called emergency helpline 999 as Ishrat was not responding for a long time,” said Safayet.

“Later, the firefighters broke open the bathroom door and found her in an unconscious state around 7:15am. She was taken to DMCH where the doctors pronounced her dead," he added.

Ishrat had gone to the bathroom at night to take a shower after getting soaked in rain and did not come out all night, BSS reported quoting Lalbagh police station OC KM Ashraf Uddin.

“The exact cause behind her death will be known after receiving the autopsy report,” he added.

Meanwhile, Md Saiful Islam, station officer of Palashi Barrack Fire Station, told UNB: “Our initial suspicion is that she collapsed on the bathroom floor and died of an unknown illness. The deceased reportedly had cold-related problems."
