Multiple spots on road no. 2 of the Adabor area in Dhaka collapsed on Wednesday after not being able to withstand the pressure from underground biogas.
Confirming the matter, Md Din Mohammad, leader of Mohammadpur Fire Station, said: “The underground sewerage line chambers had ventilation windows leveled with streets.
“However, the carpeting work on the road was done with the ventilation manhole being closed in the process. There was no space for the gas to leave the sewerage line, resulting in the eruption in some of the chambers.”
Firefighters rushed to the area at around 6pm after being informed of the matter. They did not find any casualties, he added.
After inspecting the spots, they entrusted the matter to Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company.
Adabor police station Office-in-Charge (OC) Kazi Shahiduzzaman said: “Biogas formed in Wasa chambers found no ventilation to exit the place. Piled-up gas suddenly made its way out, resulting in the collapse at no fewer than five spots on the road.”
Fortunately, there were no vehicles plying the road at the time, the OC remarked, before adding: “The eruptions could have caused fatalities.”
City corporation officials were looking into the matter, he stated.
