Update : 21 Dec 2020, 05:52 PM

For the second time in under a month, a fire has gutted a slum in the Mirpur Kalshi area.

Fire Service and Civil Defence control room duty officer Ershad Hussain told Dhaka Tribune they were informed about the fire around 1:55pm and it was brought under control at 3:03pm.

Six units from the Mirpur and Kurmitola zone office rushed to the spot and doused the fire, he added.

Mirpur Pallabi police station OC Kazi Wazed Ali said police rushed to the spot as soon as the fire broke out. They started working in coordination with the fire service to control the fire.

No information on casualties or damage had been received as of 4:30pm. The cause of the fire is also yet to be discerned.

Chhoton, a resident of Taltala slum, said: "Everything has been burnt to ashes in the fire. No one was able to leave the scene with anything. I managed to get out taking along the women and children."

Many people in the slums used to rear chickens, they could not even bring those out, he said.

The previous fire took place at another slum in the area on November 25. About 50 shanties were burnt down.
