Muggers have shot a Bangladeshi expatriate from Italy in the leg in broad daylight and snatched Tk5,70,000 from him in Savar.
The incident took place in front of a police check post near Turag Bridge in Aminbazar area of Savar around 10:30 am on Wednesday.
The locals rescued the injured expatriate and admitted him to Savar Upazila Health Complex.
The expatriate, Md Amanullah, 40, is the son of Siddique Ali from Sirajnagar Battali area of Dhaka's Keraniganj.
Amanullah’s wife Suma Akhter, who was also with him at the time of incident, said: "We were going home in a private car after withdrawing Tk5,70,000 from Amin Bazar branch of Islami Bank to build a house.
“As our car crossed the Bhakurta Iron Bridge and proceeded a little further, 10 hijackers on five motorcycles stopped our vehicle in front of the police check post,” she added.
She said: “The muggers fired five shots, one of which hit my husband in the left leg. We saw the hijackers at the bank. A few of them had been walking around us and had seen how much money we had withdrawn, and then followed us from there.”
Savar Model police station Inspector (investigation) Saiful Islam said several teams of police were working to investigate the matter and legal action was being taken.
