A mobile court of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-3) has seized 128,000 kg of banned polythene in a sting operation in Dhaka.
The operation was carried out at the Sowari Ghat area of the capital’s Chawkbazar on Sunday morning.
Elite Force (RAB-3) Executive Magistrate Palash Kumar Basu told BSS that 10 individuals from five companies were each sentenced with one year imprisonment for producing and selling polythene.
He said the mobile court of RAB-3 and Environment Department started the operation at around 9:30am Sunday from the slope of 30 Devidas Ghat Lane Police Box at Sowari Ghat in Chawkbazar.
During the operation, 25 trucks of illegal polythene and raw materials for making polythene worth Tk2 crore was seized, the official added.
The Executive Magistrate also said that 10 people have been arrested so far during the raid for making and stocking in these illegal polythene factories in five establishments.
The amount of seized polythene is higher than any recent campaign in the last 10-15 years, he said.
Details of the seized goods and detention or fines will be announced at the end of the operation as the campaign is still going on, said the official.
