Shariful Islam Shakil, the last elected vice-president (VP) of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall of Dhaka University (DU), is suffering from a critical disease related to the heart and brain.
He was a student of the university's sociology department in the 2013-14 academic session and is also a former Chhatra League DU unit and hall unit leader.
Shariful has been suffering from the illness for eight days. He was admitted to Millennium Hospital in Dhaka before being transferred to Square Hospital as his condition deteriorated, said his elder brother Ariful Islam.
Ariful, an official of the judiciary service, told this correspondent that his family is running out of money to bear the cost of his younger brother's treatment.
"He has been unconscious except for once, when he opened his eyes and said that his eyesight was blurry. We cannot shift him to a government facility, where the treatment cost is a bit lower, considering his condition at the ICU," Ariful said.
"We have to pay as much as Tk1 lakh a day for his treatment. As I am simply a government employee and the only earning member of my family, it is now going beyond my capacity to bear the cost of treatment," he added.
Ariful, also an alumnus of DU, appealed for aid to continue Shakil's treatment.
