Two married women have been killed in separate incidents in Dhaka on Friday, and police have arrested the husband in both cases.

In Mirpur, victim Rezia Akhter, in her mid-forties, was beaten to death by her husband Jahir Uddin Babar at their home in Block B.

The victim’s son Md Joy said his parents had been arguing at around 4am. At one stage, Jahir beat Rezia and critically injured her.

Rezia was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Hospital sources said she had injuries on her head as well as on other parts of her body.

Kalam Uddin, elder brother of the victim, said Rezia’s husband has mental problems. The couple have three daughters and a son.

Neither Rezia’s son nor her brother could say why Jahir killed her.

Mirpur police Sub-Inspector (SI) Golam Kibria said a case has been filed over the incident and Jahir arrested.

Meanwhile, a teenage housewife was strangled to death reportedly by her husband and in-laws in the Dakshinkhan area of the capital.

Police recovered the body of Sharaban Tahura in the afternoon and have arrested her husband Awlad Hossain Shanto. Tahura’s in-laws are on run after the incident, police said.

Dakshinkhan police SI Hasan Ali said Tahura and Awlad were married five months ago without the consent of their families. Later, both families accepted the marriage but Awlad’s family had been torturing Tahura for various reasons, including the demand for dowry.

The SI said police suspect Awlad and his family members may have strangled Tahura on Thursday night or Friday morning. Police recovered the body and arrested Awlad after being informed by neighbours.

Tahura’s father Abul Hasan has filed a murder case accusing Awlad, his parents and brother.
