A man who was beaten for protesting drug dealing near the Bihari Camp in Dhaka’s Pallabi died from his injuries in a hospital on Saturday.
Pallabi police have arrested one of the two suspects in the case filed over the murder.
The deceased was identified as Biplob Hawlader, 35. He used to run a scrap shop business in the Pallabi area.
Family members said Biplob died at Dhanmondi General and Kidney Hospital while undergoing treatment on Saturday night. The body was sent to Shahid Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
The victim’s nephew Niloy Sujan said Biplob had gotten into an argument with two men named Imtiaz and Roni near the Bihari Camp on Thursday night. At one point, Imtiaz and Roni beat Biplob and left him severely injured.
Subsequently, Biplob was rushed to the hospital in Dhanmondi where he died two days later.
Biplob’s wife Ismat Jahan said Roni and Imtiaz are accused of dealing drugs in the Bihari Camp area. Imtiaz’s father Mostaque Ahmed is president of the Bihari Welfare Mission.
Ismat claimed Imtiaz and Roni had killed her husband as he had protested their drug dealing.
Police said Imtiaz fled after the clash on Thursday night, while Roni has been arrested.
Naima Khatun, sub-inspector (SI) of Pallabi police station, said that they are investigating the case and trying to arrest the other accused.
