Another child dies from Bangshal gas blast

Her parents are undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery

Another child who sustained burns in a fire that broke out due to the gas explosion in Dhaka's Bangshal area, has died at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Jannatul Islam Nayeem, 4, died early Saturday while undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU), said the institute's Chief Coordinator Dr Samanta Lal Sen.

She received 60% burns and was in a critical condition.

The explosion took place on the ground floor of a two-storey building in Kasaituli area of Old Dhaka on July 23.

The victim's brother, Moinul Islam, 3, died on the spot as a wall collapsed on him following the impact of the explosion.

The explosion, that also caused the fire, left the children's parents -- Javed Hossain, 30, and Shiuli Akhter, 25 -- burnt.

Both of them are undergoing treatment at the institute.

Physicians said Javed and Shiuli sustained 37% and 17% burns respectively.

Bangshal police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahin Fakir said they suspect the explosion occurred either due to excess pressure of gas, as pipelines were being repaired in front of the house, or one of the family members might have tried to light the stove in the kitchen.

Police are investigating the matter, he added.
