Youth killed in Dhaka ‘gunfight’

A raid was conducted to catch the DB Gang leader Zaheer when a gunfight broke out

A youth was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Bosila area of the capital in the early hours of Friday.

The incident took place at about 3am on Friday and the deceased, aged around 35 years, could not be identified as yet.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (media) Walid Hossain confirmed the matter.

He said, police conducted a raid in Bosila to catch hijacker Zaheer, the ringleader of a gang known as DB gang, which commits crimes by impersonating members of Detective Branch of police.

Police reached the location upon getting information from sources in Bosila and from the confessional statements of two gang members, who are the main accused in a case of hijacking Tk35 lakh from Taj Mahal Road area under Mohammadpur police station.

Sensing the presence of police, the criminals opened fire. Then police also fired back in self-defence.

Four police members were injured and all the criminals fled the scene except one injured who got shot.

Police later found a weapon and three rounds of ammunition from the location.

Police rushed the injured youth to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where the doctors on duty declared him dead, he further added.

The body was later sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy. However, no one claimed the body until the writing of this report at around 9:30pm.
