DGHS finds Aedes larvae in 25% of Dhaka houses

Aedes mosquito transmits the virus that causes dengue, which claimed 179 lives last year

Aedes mosquito larvae have been found in 46 (25%) out of 197 houses in Dhaka.

The inspection was conducted in 12 wards of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) on Saturday.

The houses were inspected as part of the pre-season aedes survey monitoring activities of 2020.

Ten teams from the National Malaria Elimination and Aedes Transmitted Disease Control Program, CDC, DGHS are directly participating in the monitoring activities along with DNCC.

The monitoring activities, which began on June 6, will continue till June 15.

As many as 197 houses were inspected during the monitoring, of which 46 houses were found to have Aedes mosquito larvae and pupae. Several potential breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes were also observed.

The houses with Aedes larvae were fined a total of Tk4,49,000 by the executive magistrate of the teams, while houses with potential breeding grounds were served warning.

Of the wards inspected, in wards 27 and 33, the larvae of the diseases-carrying mosquitoes were found in tubs used for gardening and bird cages on the roofs of some houses. These homeowners were also warned.

In order to create public awareness, leaflets containing messages about controlling Aedes mosquito breeding were distributed, and homeowners of the area were alerted during the monitoring process.

It may be recalled that Bangladesh experienced a massive dengue outbreak in 2019 when 101,354 people were hospitalized. According to the health authorities, the mosquito-borne disease killed 179 people last year.
