A writ petition has been filed in the High Court seeking a lockdown in Dhaka to curb the coronavirus transmission.

At the same time, the writ also sought to procure adequate high-flow nasal oxygen cannula to facilitate the treatment of coronavirus patients.

Supreme Court Advocate Manzil Morshed filed the writ petition on behalf of lawyer Mahbubul Islam on Thursday, reports Bangla Tribune.

The cabinet secretary, secretary of health, secretary of finance, secretary at prime minister's secretariat, director general of health division, two additional secretaries of the Health Ministry (hospitals and administration), police commissioner, director general of RAB, and mayors of two city corporations of Dhaka have been made defendants in the writ.

The writ petition seeks directions from the defendants to enforce a complete lockdown in Dhaka.

The writ petition said during the lockdown in the capital, the mayors of the two city corporations will provide food and medicine to the needy people in every area through the commissioners. The government will provide overall cooperation in this work.

The health workers will take action as per the recommendation of the technical committee formed during the coronavirus for better treatment, according to the writ.

The writ petition also mentioned that thousands of people are being diagnosed with coronavirus in Dhaka city and more than a thousand people have already died.

On April 18, the government formed a 17-member National Technical Advisory Committee with Prof Shahidullah as the chairman. Considering the gravity of the situation, the committee, at its last meeting on June 8, unanimously took a number of decisions and recommendations to reduce deaths from coronavirus.

The writ petition sought to implement the decisions and recommendations of the advisory committee.
