A mobile court has fined a food product seller for selling fake sanitizers amidst the coronavirus crisis.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-3 Executive Magistrate Palash Kumar Basu said the owner Rezaur Rahman was fined Tk5 lakh, or three months of jail if he fails to pay the amount, in accordance with The Consumers’ Right Protection Act, 2009.

RAB-3 also seized several fake sanitizers and components used in their making during the raid.

“Reza Food Products only has a license for selling food,” said the magistrate. “They had sanitizers with labels that said they were 100% effective.”

Expired hand wash products were also seized during the raid, he said.

“It’s a wonder how a food seller could dare to sell such health products that require special permission,” the magistrate added.
