The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police has arrested a man for allegedly making defamatory remarks on social media against Dr Moyeen Uddin, the first doctor in Bangladesh to die of Covid-19 while fighting on the frontline against the deadly disease.
The CID Cyber Police unit arrested the man from Dhaka’s Badda area on Wednesday, according to a press release.
The arrested was identified as HM Riaz, 31, from Bakerganj upazila of Barisal.
Khairul Alam, additional superintendent of CID’s Cyber Police unit, said a vested quarter was spreading adverse comments about Dr Moyeen Uddin, who was an assistant professor at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College.
Many of the doctors contacted the Cyber Police unit and requested them to take legal actions against the people behind the defamatory remarks, he added.
Later, a team of Cyber Police unit started investigating the matter. They identified various posts spreading defamatory remarks against Dr Moyeen Uddin as well as the community of doctors, the CID official said.
Khairul said they arrested Riaz in this connection and seized his mobile phone as evidence, adding that legal action will be taken against him.
Dr Moyeen Uddin tested positive for Covid-19 on April 5 and died at the intensive care unit of Kurmitola General Hospital in Dhaka on April 15.
The CID asked everyone to share information on any cyber-crime or any kind of rumours on social media.
