As many as 53 people were slapped with fines in capital Dhaka on Wednesday for breaching the social distancing rules to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.
A Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-operated mobile court conducted drives in the city’s Mirpur, Kalyanpur, Kaptanbazar, Bangshal, Mayor Hanif flyover, and Gulistan areas, said a spokesperson of the elite police unit.
Fines worth Tk50,300 were issued against 53 people for violating the new rules brought in to stem the spread of coronavirus, said Assistant Director Sujiy Sarker of the RAB’s Legal and Media Wing.
The death toll from the fast-spreading virus in Bangladesh has reached 50 after four more fatalities were reported in the last 24 hours.
Another 219 new infections were detected in the same period, taking the number of confirmed cases to 1,231.
Meanwhile, the number of cases of Covid-19 reported worldwide passed two million, according to a Reuters tally.
It took 83 days to reach the first million cases worldwide and just 14 days for the second million.
The most serious pandemic in a century has killed 131,101 people around the world, according to the tally.
