Hundreds of poor and helpless individuals staged a demonstration in Badda link road at around 11am on Tuesday, protesting lack of relief aid distribution in the area.
Many involved in the protest claimed that they had received no aid from the government.
Md. Parvez Islam, Officer In-Charge (OC) of Badda Police Station informed that the amount of relief aid available was far below what was actually required for the area.
To compound problems, councilors of wards 21, 37, and 38 were distributing relief only among their own voters, according to many protesters.
The councillors had initially brought relief aid for distribution in the main roads. But after a while, they took the relief goods to their respective wards, leaving many people empty handed.
This prompted many deprived individuals to gather in Progati Sarani (Badda main road-Gulshan link road) in protest, said Parvez.
Councilor of ward 21 of Dhaka North City Corporation Masum Goni denied the accusations.
The other two councillors (of ward 37 and 38) could not be reached.
Eashanur Rhaman Suman, on behalf of local member of parliament AKM Rahmat Ullah, told Dhaka Tribune that rice and pulse (six kg rice, two kg pulse) for a total of 9,500 people have been provided to by nine councillors from the MP's personal funds in his constituency.
