The baby giraffe, named Wuhan, has been in critical condition just two days after being born at the Dhaka Zoo.
Wuhan was born premature on Saturday, and complications were noticed after the delivery, said Dr Nurul Islam, curator of the zoo, on Monday.
“Although the weight of the baby giraffe was normal, but it had weak legs and took more than 12 hours to stand and take food. Usually, baby giraffe gets up on its feet after just a few hours of birth,” he added.
The curator also said a medical board has been formed to look into the health of the premature baby giraffe.
Meanwhile, another baby giraffe born on March 25, Durjoy, has been in good health.
Currently, there have 10 giraffes at the National Zoo in Dhaka, including the last baby Wuhan.
Four giraffes were brought to the zoo in 2012, of which one died two years ago. However, seven giraffe babies were born in the zoo since then, including Wuhan.
Meanwhile, the zoo now has nine Arabian horses after a new baby was born last month. The Hippopotamus family has also increased to 16 with the arrival of one new offspring.
Ostriches have also been laying egg and authorities have been taking preparations to set up an incubator at the zoo.
The zoo remains closed since March 20 amid the coronavirus outbreak.
“We are providing better food and healthcare to all of our caged residents,” Curator Dr Nurul Islam said.
There are total 2,778 animals and birds of 137 species have been kept at the national zoo, the curator added.
